Rit offers plenty of dye colors for both their regular and synthetic fabric dyes, plus you can always combine dyes to create your own special hue. This blogger took an ivory/light beige wing chair and turned it into a gorgeous shade of blue. As noted earlier, unless your upholstered item is white or off-white, you’re kind of limited to dyeing your item to a darker color of whatever color it is now. I ended up not buying cleaning liquid to use in the Bissell and opted to use warm water, and it worked well.
This can be achieved by choosing luxe velvet additions, preferably in rich jewel tones. “While additional accent seating is welcome, we love the idea of keeping the space [clear] to take full advantage of the sofa’s modular capabilities,” she adds. A frequent question I get from my Instagram followers is how to clean a fabric sofa and how I care for and maintain my upholstered furniture in general. I have fabric dining chairs, cushioned counter stools, two velvet sofas, and boucle armchairs on my main level. But I apply the same care and maintenance to any other fabrics in my home such as linen drapes or upholstered beds. Recently, we added four velvet dining chairs (the Manhattan Dining Chairs) to our well-used breakfast nook and a gorgeous crushed velvet sofa (the Meredith Velvet Sofa) to our living room.
What kind of furniture lasts the longest?
Same dye to boiling water ratios, but what elevates this to the top of my recommendations list for this project is how even the coverage is right away. The key to good results with any of the spray methods is to spray from about 4-6 inches away from the fabric, slightly overlap your spray patterns, and feather it all in with a brush. I tried out various paint brush techniques, and the one that resulted in the best coverage was turning the brush on its edge and brushing the dye on that way. I used my favorite paint brush to paint/brush on the dye, and while it went quick enough, I will admit it was a little tedious. I will also note that the Rit Dye bottle instructions state to use 5 ml per four ounces of boiling water- lies! I found my ratio to be perfect to achieve saturated, opaque results in 2-3 coats.

If you’re still feeling doubtful, come on over to my Facebook group and ask some of us there. I did two light coats with about two hours of drying time in between. I think it’s a good idea to plan on doing two full coats of fixative on the entire piece. Another reason to allow the dye to dry between coats is to see the true color and see if it’s the desired shade.
How Long Does Bedding Last?
Then, to be sure that my toile chair hadn’t yellowed, I pulled out a remnant I had left of the original fabric (which I have kept dust free in tissue paper and a plastic bag). I had a space for a library/music room and wanted to decorate it right, with furniture and style that would stand the test of time. The most satisfying part was adding the repaired old cushions to the couch and sitting down. If I’m honest, I think our new couch is better looking than the old one. We just secured the plywood to the metal frame with wood screws thru the holes we drilled into the angle iron. Originally, we thought we would need to bolt each section of the sectional together, but with the weight of the metal, it wasn’t necessary. But when we saw the frame painted black it just reminded me of one of those futon couches from my college days.

Once you have let the fabric dye dry it’s time to seal it all in with the Rit dye fixative. If you have a small piece (foot stool, chair) you want to dye, a paint brush or spray bottle is good enough. While doing my trial dye coats, I used a hairdryer on warm to dry the dye quicker. You need to allow each coat of dye to dry a bit before continuing. You also hear me say that during my various painting projects and dye is no different in that respect. Learning from my mistake with Dawn Soap, I tested my dye color on the underside of a cushion to ensure it would look that way I wanted it to. I did one coat, two coats and three coats side by side using a paint brush to gauge how dark and saturated I could get the color before committing.
Even so, she recently ordered a burnt-orange sofa bed from Made.com because she couldn’t find anything similar on the market and she thought it was worth waiting for, even if it took a year. Callède describes those early days as “fast-paced”, “extremely exciting” and “full of creativity” – but naturally there were still teething problems. Callède personally visited manufacturers to convince them the business model would work and these conversations were not always easy. Sofas 72″W (6′; heavy math) exist and may have the moniker, “apartment sofa.” Anything shorter is likely called a loveseat. This has nothing to do with the size of your room; I just think gigantic roll arms are…inadvisable. The arms can be whatever style you like, from narrow to thick, from rounded to slightly curved to straight.
