E-cigarette use among youth is known for its association with certain lung illnesses. The flavoring chemical, diacetyl, is safe to ingest but not inhale through the lungs like it is through e-cigarette use (CATCH, 2020; Vas et al., 2019). Research shows that inhalation of diacetyl can cause Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disorder (COPD), popcorn lung (shortness of breath), and even increase asthma (Rose, 2017; Vape Danger, n.d.). Vitamin E acetate, an ingredient found in dab pens (a type of e-cigarette for marijuana use) is also known for its negative effects on the lungs (CATCH, 2020; Boudi et al., 2019).

Since e-cigarettes are still fairly new, medical experts haven’t fully determined their short- and long-term health effects. Tarran, who is a member of the UNC Lineberger Comprehensive Cancer Center, and colleagues measured levels of three key protease enzymes in lung fluid sampled from 41 subjects – nonsmokers, smokers, and vapers. Immune cells in the lungs are known to secrete these enzymes at higher levels in a reaction to cigarette smoke.

In September 2018, in the largest coordinated enforcement effort in the agency’s history, the agency issued more than 1,100 warning letters and initiated 131 civil money penalty complaints to retailers who sold e-cigarettes to minors.
